Black-capped Chickadee Portrait

Details: Acrylic on canvas | 4 × 4 inches

Inspiration: An up close and personal study of one of our most cheerful backyard birds—and wonderfully round, or “borb,” as the internet has so eloquently dubbed such a plump shape.

Process: IT’s been an interesting challenge translating big personality onto a small canvas. This species in particular appears to be mostly black and white and grey, but honing in has made me observe and appreciate its subtle tan accent coloring more.

Note: I am somewhat loathe to give it up, but I suppose I can paint more… it’s currently available at my shop

Avian Side: Chickadees are tiny hoarders with amazing memories: they stash food one morsel at a time in thousands of hiding places—and remember where. Meanwhile, many of us can’t remember why we walked into a room.
