Introduction: I tend to move through mini phases — my attention span can rival that of a fruit fly. This piece continues my brief “Bleak Tree” period, which lasted about a week and involved quite a bit of literally watching paint dry… waiting for the moment when manipulating would create texture instead of mud.

Process: Did you ever layer bright crayons as a kid, cover the whole thing in black, and then scratch through it with a toothpick to reveal the colors beneath? This is essentially that — only with acrylic instead of crayon, and a scraper or palette knife instead of a toothpick. Consider it my not-so-top-secret method.
